The glamour of Monaco is not just about the annual Grand Prix Monte Carlo 2013 on May 23-26, though it’s true that James Bond wouldn’t be caught in his tuxedo anywhere else. The principality is rich in history dating back to the ascension of the Grimaldi dynasty in the 13th century. With opera, dance, art and fashion exhibitions, the Monaco Red Cross Ball, the Monaco Tennis Open, and Monaco Boat Show, visitors can enjoy a robust calendar of activities throughout the year. While it’s true that my adrenaline is on fire watching Formula One from luxury hotel rooftops and private apartments, I am equally pleased to watch the race onboard a mega yacht like the Pershing 80- Bond’s favorite floating vessel– champagne, caviar and a breathtaking landscape in tow.
It’s true that I enjoy good parties and exclusive events and if you’re lucky enough to score a VIP table at Jimmy’Z during one of the Grand Prix nights, you’re sure to find yourself in a sea of celebrities, jetsetters and royalty. I can’t possibly leave out a visit to the casinos where 007 and his leading lady Vesper Lynd gave new meaning to Riviera chic. Dressed to the nines like the great screen iconic legends -Grace Kelly in “To Catch a Thief” and Audrey Hepburn in “Charade”, I suggest a whirlwind shopping trip to Chanel, Hermes, and Gucci for starters. If you’re looking to stock up on the latest in Pucci loungewear and stylish ornate flip flops I suggest the boutique at the Monte Carlo beach club though there are many delightful boutiques for men and women to peruse.
Many visitors dash home after the race, but I generally meander the tiny country and visit my friends (that would be seahorses) at the Oceanographic Museum. I’ll end up taking cooking lessons at Joel Robuchon Monte Carlo or dancing the night away at Zelo’s – a favorite hotspot of jetsetters including Prince Albert. Monaco is my launching pad in discovering the Riviera so if you’re an adventure seeker like your favorite spy I encourage you to take day trips to St. Tropez and Antibes in search of fantastic wines, cuisine and soak in the sun while enjoying water sports.
